The manager of Vienna’s municipal housing, Wiener Wohnen, warns against fraudulent letters. In them, tenants are asked to transfer the rent to a new account.
Many tenants have received letters in their mailboxes in recent days. In them were fake rent notices. The letter looks deceptively real: it is pointed out that Wiener Wohnen has changed the account number. In addition to the new account number – which belongs to the banking institution BAWAG – the further rent notice is also listed, including a QR code.
Fake account details – do not transfer the rent to the account
The fake account details concern an account at the banking institution BAWAG (recognizable by the BIC: BAWAATWW). Do not transfer your rent to this account, and do not use the printed QR code to transfer the rent (Wiener Wohnen has not changed the bank details).
In the meantime, the police have taken over the investigation. It is unclear whether and how many tenants have fallen victim to this scam.
If you suspect that you have received a forged letter, please get in touch with the Wiener Wohnen service number 05 75 75 75. Or send a photo/scan of the forged demand note to the mail address: gtn-b11@ma06.wien.gv.at
